Did you know that the word "chia" means strength, in the ancient mayan civilization?
Chia seeds are tiny black seeds from the plant Salvia Hispanica which is related to the mint. This plant grows natively in South America. Chia seeds were an important food for the Aztecs and Mayans back in the day. Chia seeds are one of the richest vegetable sources of Omega 3 and it delivers a massive amount of nutrients with very few calories. Don’t be fooled by the size - these tiny seeds pack a powerful nutritional punch. A 1 ounce (28 grams) serving of chia seeds contains (1, 2):
Fiber: 11 grams.
Protein: 4 grams.
Fat: 9 grams (5 of which are Omega-3s).
Calcium: 18% of the RDA.
Manganese: 30% of the RDA.
Magnesium: 30% of the RDA.
Phosphorus: 27% of the RDA.
They also contain a decent amount of Zinc, Vitamin B3 (Niacin), Potassium, Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) and Vitamin B2.
Athletes all over the world use Chia seeds daily. The acclaimed "Tarahumara" tribe from northern Mexico, who are considered by many to be the world's best long distance runners, use Chia seeds as staple food in their diet. The name "Chia" means also "oily". You can use chia in so many ways. In smoothies and salad, for baking and jogurt - you can't get bored with chia seeds. Haven't you tried chia pudding yet? Soak Chia seeds in water and very quickly a gelatinous, clear-film, forms around these small seeds. The plant is considered easy to cultivate and can grow up to be one meter tall.
